Brits Spend Over 7 Hours Tidying Each Week, New Research Reveals

With more than half of the nation knowing of tidying guru Marie Kondo and digital cleaning superstars such as Mrs Hinch, Brits are being inspired to spend more time cleaning and decluttering their homes

According to figures revealed by a new survey from eRetailer AppliancesDirect, one in three (38%) Brits feel inspired to tidy their homes thanks to the influence of Marie Kondo. When asked, over two thirds (65%) said they had heard of Marie Kondo, with 58% having watched her recent series, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.

Of the 1,042 UK adults surveyed, 44% of those aware of Marie Kondo said they now know what her famous KonMari tidying method entails, with one in five (21%) reporting they have taken to getting rid of items in their home as a result.

According to research, as a nation, we now spend an average of 7.45 hours each week tidying our homes, with Generation Z (aged 18-24) coming out as the tidiest of us all, spending eight hours each week cleaning and tidying.

Mark Kelly, marketing manager at AppliancesDirect commented: “It’s fascinating to see the impact and influence Marie Kondo is having on British adults with her tidying hacks and tips. This is perhaps unsurprising given that she has propelled to stardom over recent months thanks to her book, but most notably her recent Netflix documentary.

“The research also paints a picture of how the younger generation are spending a large amount of time tidying their home, showing how much Marie Kondo’s hacks are influencing this age group in their tidying routine. Clearly, Brits want a home they can see as a haven to relax in, whilst also being a place that they can proudly show off to friends and visitors.”

The KonMari method of creating a house filled with items that spark joy isn’t the only method inspiring us to spend hours decluttering and tidying up our homes. Instagram star and soon to be author Mrs Hinch (Sophie Hinchcliffe) is being hailed as responsible for the rise in sales of home cleaning products such as the minky, which sold out for weeks following her recommendations.
