5 compliments that aren’t about how someone looks

Want to let someone know you appreciate them without falling back on clichés? Look no further, we’re here to inspire
There’s nothing wrong with letting someone know that they’re easy on the eye, but when we centre our compliments around the way we look, it can put an unequal focus on our physical appearance, rather than the people that we truly are. Besides, we can be more creative than that.
Here, we offer five compliments to inspire you for the next time you want to let someone know how much you admire them.
1. I love how passionate you are
Whether it’s about a topic that’s close to their heart or a project or cause that inspires them, let them know that you’ve noticed that fierce drive within them. Our passions are our lifeforce, and guide the decisions that we make on a daily basis. And what’s better than watching someone’s eyes light up as they talk about something they really care about? Let them know you’ve noticed that sparkle, and express how this inspires you to join them, or begin a journey of your own.
2. Your kindness touches me
We all know first-hand the power of kindness, and when you come into contact with a kind person, you’re instantly warmed by their thoughts and actions. They will likely make you feel safe, supported, and valued. Whether the acts are big or small, let someone know that their generosity isn’t going unnoticed, and that it touches yours and others’ live in incredible ways. Go into detail about what precisely it is that’s so impactful – encourage, thank, and appreciate them.
3. I like your style
Style runs deeper than fashion. For many people, it’s a way of expressing their personality, and getting creative. Love the outfit that someone has on? Let them know! Stay away from phrases like ‘that's so flattering’ – there are two sides to that coin. But if you spot your friend or loved one in a unique piece, something handmade, or wearing a new style, appreciate their creativity and confidence. Try to pick out exactly what it is that you like so much – perhaps it's a beautiful fabric, a fascinating design, or a sassy twist on a staple piece – and link it back to an aspect of their personality that you love.
4. I admire your knowledge
We’re all experts in something, whether it’s astrophysics or the TV show Friends, and knowing someone who is able to speak extensively about a topic can not only help us learn too, but is also a pleasure to witness. A lot of hard work goes into building up a strong knowledge base, and sharing some admiration for that work won’t go amiss! When they’re speaking on a topic, engage with them and ask follow up questions. If they’ve sparked your curiosity and you’ve looked into something further, share that with them – they’re guaranteed to be delighted that you have a new common interest.
5. I’m inspired by your authenticity
When you come across someone who is 100% unapologetically, authentically themselves, it shines through. But not only that, you might find that you are more relaxed around these kinds of people. Of course, being yourself isn’t always easy, there is so much external pressure out there to look and present in a certain way – which makes authenticity all the more inspiring. With these people, what you see is what you get, and you love and appreciate them just as they are.
