The Devon drumming group making noise across the UK
updated on Jun 19, 2026

A growing movement-based initiative combining rhythm, fitness, and brain health is drumming up a lot of attention.
Drums4Health, which is based in Devon, uses purpose-built drums and structured rhythmic patterns to actively engage both the body and the brain – supporting coordination, cognitive function, neuroplasticity, and physical wellbeing.
Classes are open to all levels of fitness and musical ability and are commonly held in community settings and schools. According to founder Tamsin Logan Ward, the unique form of exercise is particularly effective for people with dementia, where participants demonstrate engagement, social interaction, and moments of joy that can be harder to access through more traditional activities.
“Participants who may initially be withdrawn often begin to join in rhythmically, smile, and connect with others in the room,” says Tamsin.
“Importantly, we are now working with dementia organisations who are exploring a staff training model, where managers are trained to deliver Drums4Health themselves.”
Much of this is made possible due to the accessible nature of sessions, which can be delivered seated or standing, with no floor work or high-impact movement. In some schools, Drums4Health is even being introduced as part of the mental health and wellbeing curriculum, supporting emotional regulation and confidence, particularly for pupils who may not thrive in traditional sport settings.
With the initiative now expanding across the UK, it's safe to say Drums4Health is on a roll — and that's music to everyone's ears.
